Hello everyone, Alexey Tkachenko, founder of the Site3D Configurator service, is in touch.

For about 5 years now, I have been creating three-dimensional browser designers for various business areas. And today I want to share the case of one of our clients. He fairly fully reveals the issue of the cost of 3D-configurators.

The client needed to produce 6 models of all-terrain vehicles based on photographs, and then present them in an interactive 3D-form on the company's website. In the configurators themselves, it was necessary to additionally allow the buyer to change the body color.

Initially, the client contacted four companies with a request to calculate the cost and timing of the project. For obvious reasons, we will not disclose the names of the companies. It is important that these companies specialize in the development of 3D-configurators.

And that's what they said…

Company No. 1

If it is possible to find ready-made models in a suitable form, and they will be well optimized and adaptable to the web, then the entire project can be completed in 300 thousand rubles.

This includes:

  • Modification of models and optimization for the web
  • Development of the 3D-configurator itself (color change, minimal interactivity)
  • Adaptation to mobile and desktop devices
  • The budget is also influenced by:
  • Do I need to visualize the interior or just the exterior
  • Will different elements be customizable (e.g. wheels, cab, logo)
  • How different are the models from each other (if they are completely different, then this is additional work)
  • Do I need integration with the website, the order system, taking into account requests, etc.

Company No. 2

The cost will start from 400 thousand rubles, and the duration of the project will vary from 1 to 3 months.

Company No. 3

We will complete the project with the following sequence of work:

  • Preparatory work (20 040 – 32 400 rub)
  • Configurator interface (113 000 – 147 000 rub)
  • Preparation of 3D-models (68 000 – 84 000 rub)
  • Functionality of the 3D-configurator (180 000 – 270 000 rub)
  • Testing, debugging and project launch (12,970 – 25 940 rubles)

Total amount: 394 010 – 559 340 rub.

Duration: from 32 to 38 calendar days or 139 to 197 working hours.

Company No. 4

The project will be implemented in the following stages:

  • Development of 3D-models from scratch (300 thousand rubles for 6 models)
  • Optimization of the model for working in the browser (100 thousand rubles for 6 models)
  • Application development, scene setup, etc. for the model to work in the browser, 360 rotation, zoom in/out (100 thousand rubles)
  • Body color change algorithm (20 thousand rubles)

Total amount: 520 thousand rubles.

Comparison with our solution

We offered the client a relatively low-cost solution, as we are developing 3D-configurators using the automated Site3D Configurator cloud service.

Thanks to this platform, no individual development was required, and to implement the project, the client only needed a subscription of 38 400 rubles per year, and we made 3D-models for 30,000 rubles.

The functionality itself was already built into the service and it only took downloading models and minimal configuration of the configurators through the visual interface. Next, the code for embedding on the site was obtained, so the integration of the ready-made solution was not difficult.

When is personal development needed, and when is a cloud platform enough?

Individual development provides full control over the project and allows you to take into account all the nuances and wishes of the customer.

Although it requires significant investment and time, it can pay off in the long run due to higher customization and meeting the specific needs of the business.

On the other hand, cloud services offer a more cost-effective and faster solution. They are suitable for companies that need to adapt quickly to the market, as well as with a limited budget for modern 3D-technologies.

The final choice depends on the company's strategic goals and financial capabilities.
